Cambuslang Britannia - 80's to Present Day

The early eighties

The eighties started with the band taking part in the grand lodge of England's annual demonstration in Southport, with Bootle district.

In 1981 the band made it's first appearance in northern Ireland with crimson arrow R.B.P 590, as a guest of Belfast total abstainers R.B.P 329 (sandy row) to their annual rally in Carrickfergus.

In 1982 in the Larkhall Purple Heroes Flute Band competition Kenny Hardie won the trophy for best drum major, but the best was yet to come. At the 1983 competition the Young Conquerors won, best blood & thunder, best march and best overall band.

By 1985 many of the Young Conquerors were becoming "old" conquerors so the band decided on a change of name!

The Cambuslang Britannia was to be born.

End of the eighties-start of the nineties

The uniform was now a full suit. First blue suits with red trim, then red suits with black and gold trim.

During these years the band moved home several times rehearsing in schools and orange clubs in both Cambuslang and Rutherglen.

We paraded regularly with these District Lodges and often with private Lodges such as LOL 116 Cambuslang and LOL 246/LOL 213 both Rutherglen. Other county parades were still done for Cowal's first and other various Lodges in Bellshill District. Many small parades and competitions were played at across the length and breadth of the country.

1995-Onto the new era

In 1995 the band decided on a more military style uniform - which with a few subtle changes we still wear today.

1996 saw the introduction of a colour party. This was also the year of the start of our friendship with LOL 66 Kirkcaldy sons of William. Our first parade with LOL 66 was at the County Grand Lodge of the East's annual demonstration in Kirkcaldy.

1996 saw the Band return to Belfast, parading with LOL 525 Orange Volunteers, East Belfast. From 1999 the Band have paraded with LOL 1053 Star of the North, Ballyhackamore, East Belfast.

The 21st century

This year, as last, we will be parading with, District 40 Cambuslang, Kirkcaldy LOL, Ballyhackamore LOL, R.B.P 590 and the Glenrothes District branch of the Apprentice Boys.

2005 seen a brand new uniform being brought in around march and a 30th anniversary parade being held on Saturday June the 4th with the Britannia Flute Band old boys being formed for the parade. We also renewed our friendship with LOL 51, Bellshill

All the present members would like to thank all the past members and very many friends, who have played their part in keeping, the Cambuslang Britannia Flute Band functioning throughout the past 30 years.

The Band hopes to continue supporting the many, Orange, ABOD, RBP, Rangers clubs, and Loyalist organisations we have supported throughout the years, here is to another 30 years supporting the Protestant, Unionist and Loyalist community.
