The Young Conquerors
Come gather round my comrades this first of July morn!
Well it was really half past seven in the evening on this auspicious date, in
the McIntosh household in Kyle court in the year 1975 that the Young Conquerors
Flute Band was born. A constitution was agreed and the first committee elected.
President ---- J.R
Vice-President ---- Wee Eck
Secretary ---- Totten
Treasurer ---- Bic Mac
Band Sergeant ---- Fergie
Band Crpl ---- Liggy
Many of the early members were to serve the band for a long number of years,
particularly Archie and George, the early band practices were held in the
Cambuslang Institute and the old memorial hall. The bands first engagement was
in the Holepark social club, Cambuslang, on the 31st of December 1975. We had
played in public, we had a band, the "bells" rang early for many.
The 1976 marching season was soon upon the band, who paraded with District 40,
Cambuslang. The County Demonstration that year was held in West Calder. 50,000
people in two pubs. When the band survived this it could survive anything.
Although, this had not been the bands first "big walk" the week before had seen
the start of a long friendship with Cowal's first LOL, when the band accompanied
them at the County Grand Lodge of Ayrshire's Demonstration in their home
District, Greenock
This was all done in a very smart uniform. Your own black trousers, white shirt,
with a sky blue pullover, and royal blue Tom Jones bow tie supplied by the band.
Although we do not intend to write about every year, 1977, her Majesty’s Silver
Jubilee, was an important year for the Young Conquerors, once again parading
with District 40. The County’s annual "12th" rally was held in Cambuslang, a day
well remembered by all who took part. This year also saw the bands first
"foreign trip" it took part in the Tyneside Lodges Jubilee celebrations in South
Shields. It was also during this year that the long, almost unbroken association
with Crimson Arrow R.B.P 590 began.
During the last years of the 70's the band accepted an offer to parade with 20
District, Rutherglen and took part in the Glasgow walk for the first time. The
uniform was beginning to shape up, the jerseys were replaced with jackets.
