Saturday 19th May 2007 - Edinburgh, Fife - Annual ABOD Rally, Glenrothes &
District Campsie Club
Once again it was our privilege to accompany Glenrothes
and District Campsie Club at the ABOD annual demonstration, the Band have built
up an excellent relationship with the club over the years. The 'Brits'
paraded with 14 flutes, 6 side drums, 2 bass drummers and 1 cymbalist, we had a
colour party of 3 and the drum major. This is a very high percentage of our
band, so congratulations to everyone for turning out for the Parade.
The band played very well in the conditions, with extreme winds and at times
rain, I thought our colour party was about to take of on Princess Street, we
found ourselves lucky missing the rain at most points when it lashed off the bus
windows, other Bands and clubs weren't quite as lucky, this didn't detract from
the quality of Bands on show on the day, and also the crowds assembled along the
route, which at various points were dense.
The parade in general looked superb, the numbers taking part, the decorum of the
marchers seems to be leaping ahead, well done the Apprentice Boys of Scotland,
for a well organised and disciplined Parade.
After the parade in Edinburgh we all headed back to Fife for the usual evening
parades, Windygates (very apt on the day), Glenrothes (for anyone who doesn't
know Fife, think East Kilbride), the last parade as always was through Leslie.
At the end of the parade a short service was held at the cenotaph, concluding
with the laying of a wreath and the playing of the national anthem.
So to the social side of the day, the club always have a dance after the
parade. This years was an exceptional event. Apart from ourselves and Calton
Radio disco (DJ for the evening, one of our own Andy), we were treated to a set
by Glenrothes special guest Noel Large. Noel treated a very appreciative
audience to a selection of wonderful ballads, many of them his own
compositions. He was heard in silence, the order was superb, the ovation was
upstanding, it was a pleasure to be involved in such a well supported event, the
Band were received well and we were able to air a good selection of tunes, our
flute section was boosted by two more fluters from during the day, the boys had
travelled after work commitments to be with the Band and have to be commended
for such commitment.
The band rounded the evening off with a cocktail or two on the bus home, and the
night in Fife and the Rally during the day will be spoken about I'm sure as one
of the highlights of our year.
